In short: Luciola collects no data about you and never sends anything on its own. Something only leaves your PC when you look at a monitor report and send it yourself.
What Luciola stores on your PC. Settings, moods, regions, shortcuts, the journal (hours of light and brightness per monitor) and logs live only in the app's data folder on your PC. Monitors are recognized by a short, non-reversible value; the serial number itself is not stored. Window titles are never read or stored. For app rules, Luciola keeps the program path and window class of the apps you create a rule for.
What Luciola does not do. No accounts, no ads, no telemetry, no analytics, no background connections to servers. Luciola never loads code into other apps.
Monitor reports (voluntary). When Luciola does not know a monitor model yet, it asks once whether you would like to send us the technical details of that model so we can support it better. Nothing is sent without your consent. Before sending, you see the complete report exactly as it will be transmitted.
- Contents: manufacturer code, product code and model name of the monitor, its EDID (the identification data every monitor reports to Windows) without the serial number, the list of features the monitor reports over DDC/CI, and the values Luciola was able to read from them (for example brightness 70 of 100). Also the graphics card vendor, the connection type (HDMI or DisplayPort), the Luciola version and, if you like, a short note from you (500 characters at most).
- Not included: the monitor's serial number, user name, PC name, window titles, programs, file paths, an identifier of your PC or anything that links two of your reports.
- While checking, Luciola only reads the reported features. Nothing on the monitor is changed.
- Transfer and storage: the report is sent encrypted (HTTPS) to our server at jsnlabs.eu. Cloudflare sits in front of it as protection against attacks and technically processes your IP address. Your IP address is not stored with the report. To slow down abuse, the server only keeps a non-reversible short value of it in memory for up to 24 hours. Like every request, though, the IP address is in the server log for up to 7 days (see Website). The report itself is kept for up to 24 months; after that only the combined profile of the model remains, which has no link to single reports.
- Purpose and legal basis: supporting more monitor models in Luciola. The legal basis is your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), which you give by sending the individual report.
- Deleting: after sending, Luciola shows a receipt number (for example LCR-7KQ2-M4XD). With it you can have the report deleted at any time through the support page. Without the receipt we cannot link a report to you, because it contains nothing that points to you.
- Turning it off: under General, Advanced you can turn the question off completely. With "Never ask", Luciola does not ask again for that model.
Light sensor and location. If you turn it on, Dusk reads your device's ambient light sensor. For sunrise and sunset you can enter latitude and longitude yourself; Luciola does not ask any location service. Both stay on your PC.
Diagnostics export. Under General, Advanced you can create a zip file with system info, logs of the last week, crash reports and settings. User name, profile path and PC name are removed. The file only leaves your PC if you pass it on yourself, for example to support.
Website. jsnlabs.eu/luciola sets no analytics cookies, loads no fonts or scripts from other servers and uses no tracking. Cloudflare technically processes your IP address when you visit, to deliver the site and protect it from attacks. Our server logs every request with the IP address, time, requested address, status code and response time, but no browser details, to detect attacks and abuse and to find errors (legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The logs are kept on the server and on a monitoring server run by the provider, are not passed on and are deleted after 7 days at the latest.
Deleting data. General, Advanced, "Reset all settings" deletes the settings. Uninstalling the app makes Windows remove the whole data folder. We delete sent monitor reports on request with the receipt number.
